Science Fair

January 31 2008:
Celebrate Curiosity and Creativity at the Parkmead Family Science Fair

Don't Panic:

The science fair is a great chance for grown ups and kids to experiment, learn and have fun together. It is the journey that you take and the adventures that you have on the way that are important. And if you make mistakes, thats the best way to learn.

Welcome to the Parkmead Elementary School Family Science Fair Website!

chemistryWelcome to the Parkmead Elementary School, Family Science Fair website. This site will give you some ideas for projects and help you understand how to perform an experiment. If you get stuck, have a suggestion, want some help, or want to help out, please email us at parkmeadscience@gmail.com. Thanks and Good Luck.

New This Year

In addition to displaying student projects at the Fair, we'll also have an entertaining science speaker perform in the MP Room, and there will be a number of stations where parents and others give demonstrations of interesting science-related things.

Seeking Scientist Volunteers--Amateurs Welcome!
We've lined up a few of these demonstrations already, but we’d like more. If you know something about some aspect of science and could bring or do something interesting, please consider volunteering. Or if you have scientist friends who could help out, please consider asking them. To explore this further or get more info, contact Kathleen Halaszynski or Kathy Kearney.

What you need to do:

Step 1: Understand the Scientific Method

Read the "Project Types" and the "Scientific Method" to choose a prroject type and to understand the steps involved in performing a scientific experiment.

Step 2: Choose a Project

We have a list of ideas for K through 3rd Grade and for 4th through 6th Grade, plus links to other websites. Make sure you read the safety advice too.

Step 3: Fill in the Registration Form

Please register here or in the Parkmead office by Monday, January 21 so that we can ensure that your project is in the Science Fair Program and we have a Certificate for you on the night. We will deliver a Poster Board to you in your classroom or you can collect one from the science teacher, Judy Burton.

Step 4: Do your project and present it

Read the safety guidelines and suggestions on how you might present your project.

Volunteer Help Needed

We are seeking Parent Volunteers for Science Fair Night. This year the student projects will be displayed in several classrooms and the library. We’d like to have an adult volunteer in each room to help supervise. If you can take a half-hour shift in the room in which your child’s project is displayed, please contact Kathy Kearney at kkearney@calalum.org or 932-6136.

We also need volunteers at the end of the evening (8:00-8:30) to move the projects from the classrooms to the Multi-Use Room. Please also contact Kathy if you can help out with that. Thanks!

Poster Boards

Science teacher Judy Burton will deliver the boards to the classrooms of students who have registered. If you’d like yours sooner, please contact Judy at JBurton@wcsd.k12.ca.us .

If you have questions feel free to contact Kathy Kearney, Science Fair Chair, at kkearney@calalum.org or 932-6136.
