Welcome to the Parkmead Elementary School Family Science Fair Website!
Welcome to the Parkmead Elementary School, Family Science Fair website. This site will give you some ideas for projects and help you understand how to perform an experiment. If you get stuck, have a suggestion, want some help, or want to help out, please email us at parkmeadscience@gmail.com. Thanks and Good Luck.
Thank You!
Every student who presents a project at this year's Science Fair will receive FREE admission to MakerFaire 2009!
This is a family friendly event on May 30 - 31 to make, create, learn, invent, craft, recycle, think, play and be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science and technology.
Parkmead will have a booth at MakerFaire to showcase some of our students' alterative energy themed projects.
We're also putting together a Family Fun Field Trip so the rest of the family can attend at a deep, deep discount.
New This Year
The Science Committee is pleased to announce a new way to register for the Fair - online!
This year the Science Fair has a theme: Alternative Energies. Although it’s not mandatory, we’re encouraging students and their parents to consider a project based on the theme. Think solar, wind, water and/or human-powered technologies!
What is Alternative Energy?
The following are some suggestions:- Solar Electricity – Solar Car, Solar Appliances
- Solar Heat - Solar Oven, Solar Hot Dog Cooker, Solar Room Heater
- Wind Power – Wind Turbine / Generator
- Hydroelectric – Water Wheel Turbine / Generator
- Human Power – Bicycle Powered Generator, Bicycle Powered Blender
- Fuel Cell – Fuel Cell Car
- Biofuel and Biomass – Biodiesel, Methane Generator
Seeking Scientist Volunteers--Amateurs Welcome!
We've lined up a few of these demonstrations already, but we’d like more. If you know something about some aspect of science and could bring or do something interesting, please consider volunteering. Or if you have scientist friends who could help out, please consider asking them. To explore this further or get more info, contact Kathleen Halaszynski or Kathy Kearney.
What you need to do:
Step 1: Read About the Different Project Types
Learn about the different kinds of project by clicking on the “Project Types” link at the left, and think about which you would like to do. If you’re considering doing an experiment, click on the "Scientific Method" link to understand the steps involved in performing a scientific experiment.
Step 2: Choose a Project
We have a list of ideas for K through 3rd Grade and for 4th through 6th Grade to get you started thinking about an idea. The Science Buddies website has a long list of possible projects, as well as a "topic selection wizard" to help you choose a subject area that's interesting to you. Make sure you read the safety advice too.
Step 3: Fill in the Registration Form
Please register here or in the Parkmead office by Wednesday, February 11 so we can ensure that your project is in the Science Fair Program and have a Certificate for you on the night of the Fair. We will deliver a Poster Board to you in your classroom or you can collect one from the science teacher, Mrs. Judy Burton.
Step 4: Do your project and present it
Prepare a poster board describing your project.
Volunteer Help Needed
We are seeking Parent Volunteers for Science Fair Night. This year the student projects will be displayed in several classrooms and the library. We’d like to have an adult volunteer in each room to help supervise. If you can take a half-hour shift in the room in which your child's project is displayed, please indicate that on the registration form or contact Kathy Kearney at kkearney@calalum.org or 932-6136.
We also need volunteers at the end of the evening (8:00-8:30) to move the projects from the classrooms to the Multi-Use Room. Please also sign up on the registration form or contact Kathy if you can help out with that. Thanks!
Poster Boards
Science teacher Mrs. Judy Burton will deliver the boards to the classrooms of students who have registered. If you’d like yours sooner, please contact Mrs. Burton at JBurton@wcsd.k12.ca.us.
If you have questions feel free to contact Kathy Kearney, Science Fair Chair, at kkearney@calalum.org or 932-6136.
